Thessaloniki weather – at least at first glance – appears to share the same patterns as the rest of Greece. Being part of the land of eternal sunshine however, does not automatically qualify Thessaloniki –as a city permanently bathed in light. Thessaloniki weather is indeed classified as Mediterranean but the Balkan influences are prominent.
As a matter of fact, Thessaloniki, who lies on the northern fringe of the Thermaic Gulf, is situated in a transitional climatic zone. Weather in Thessaloniki is characterized by its relatively dry winters and predominantly hot summers.
During winter Thessaloniki weather is renewed for its common morning frost and its abundant sunshine. January is the coldest month of the season with an average temperature of 5C°, occasionally diving to around -14C° when weather in Thessaloniki is at its worst. Winter also coincides with the rain season, with the city experiencing an annual precipitation of about 410–450 mm. Although it tends to snow every year, accumulation rarely last for more than a few days.
By summer, Thessaloniki weather is more in tune with the rest of the country. Temperatures in Greece’s second largest city usually hover around 30C°, rarely rising to just above 40C°. Summer nights are dreadfully humid and rain falls only on the rarest of occasions, usually in the form of thunderstorms.
